🪴5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting My First Garden

I’ve always wanted a nice garden tand when I first decided to start a garden, I thought it was going to be this dreamy, Pinterest-perfect hobby. Spoiler: it wasn’t.
But honestly, that’s the fun of it. Gardening isn’t about being picture perfect — it’s about learning as you grow (literally).
1. Start Small (Your Wallet Will Thank You)
When I decided to start my garden, I thought I needed all the trendy stuff. Raised garden beds, bags of the expensive soil, and racks of grow lights. Reality check; just a pack of seeds, some compost and a pot will do.
Budget Tip: Instead of buying fancy seed starting trays, use old egg cartons or plastic fruit containers.
Bonus Budget Tip: Try looking online for used gardening items. Many people are just looking to clear out space and you can score some great stuff for a fraction of the cost.
2. Sunlight Matters
I never opted for racks of grow lights, instead I use a bay window full of light! Very rarely did I find the seedlings leggy, and if so I had a small clip-on grow light for all my plants.
Lifestyle Parallel: Like finances, if the foundation isn’t strong, nothing else will stick.
3. Failure = Free Education
Did wild animals eat a good majority of my garden? Sure did! My tasty tip I’ve learned is next season there WILL be a fence, but at least this year the little bunnies were well fed.
Glow-Up Reminder: Progress in life comes from trial and error; not perfection.
4. Seeds Are Cheaper (and More Fulfilling) Than Plants
Buying starter plants from a local store, or even a box store adds up FAST. A $3 packet of seeds can give you more food and a few seasons of gardening.
Budget Tip: Try salvaging seeds from your garden to dry and package for next year!
5. Reap the Benefits, Not Just the Rewards
The best part of gardening isn’t the final tomato. It’s the quiet watering sessions, the surprise sprouts, and the sense of “I grew this.”
Life Lesson: Whether it’s your finances, your glow-up, or fitness don’t just chase the final goal — celebrate the little wins along the way.
Thanks for spending a little time here with me. Until next time, keep creating, keep growing, and keep doing life—unfiltered!🌱
